When asked “What was the favorite place you visited?” I would reply, “Venice.” Yes, it did get overcrowded and filled with tourist during the day, but I love Venice. We woke up at 5am everyday during our stay in Venice because of the jetlag. By mid afternoon we were tired, but it allowed us to see Venice early in the morning. We loved walking the nearly empty streets. We watched as what’s left of the Venetians go to work or school, before the large numbers of day trippers arrived. It also allowed us to beat the crowds for most tourist sites.
By mid-afternoon we were usually tired and sleepy, and we went back to our hotel for our afternoon nap. This routine worked out for us, because by the time we we woke up the crowds have disappeared. We enjoy the sunset and watch the buildings glow in its many shades of gold. Sit by the canals and watched gondolas passed by. Our favorite routine was to walk from the Rialto Bridge to St. Mark’s square. Eat a different gelato flavor each time, while we listen to various orchestra duel in St. Mark’s Square.
